The Recollections of Elizabeth Rolland (1803-1901)

Book excerpt: Although her name has been forgotten almost completely, Elizabeth Rolland (1803-1901) is of importance firstly as the pioneer of infant school education in South Africa; and secondly as the wife and partner of Samuel Rolland (1801-73), a leading figure in the missionary history of the country during the nineteenth century, especially as the founder of the station of Beersheba in the present Orange Free State, where he and his wife worked for twenty-eight years.
