Book excerpt: "The spread of parasitic diseases is a problem which faces most of the developing countries of the world. Many of the parasites of man do not cause obvious disease, but they do cause continual poor health. This book presents a study of the important parasites of man in Niugini. Its purpose is to achieve a scientific understanding of the causes of many of the parasitic diseases which afflict man, and to dispel the idea of witchcraft as the source and cure of these ailments. No disease-carrying parasite can be conquered unless man interferes with its life cycle. This can only be achieved when a large proportion of the population knows where, when, and how to do so effectively. Not only scientists, doctors, field and laboratory technicians and students, but all the people in the country must co-operate to understand and combat these diseases. The authors have outlined areas where future research should be carried out. A large part of the book is devoted to a study of malaria, an ever-present problem in Niugini. The high incidence of malaria causes continual poor health and decreased productivity. The information contained in this book is of local interest and is written in a language which can be easily understood by most people."--BOOK JACKET.
