Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Record, Vol. 69: A Weekly Journal of Medicine and Surgery; January 6-June 30, 1906 Hamburger19 says: The diagnosis of rupture of the esophagus is first made upon the corpse, and often contrary to all expectations, to which may be added the words of Fitz, even then the diagnosis may be attended with very great difficulties. One of the objects of this paper is to present the case in such a light that a diagnosis can be more readily made in future cases. A resume of the symptoms shows that vomiting, collapse, cyanosis, dyspnea to the extent of orthopnea, and emphysema are symptoms of the first rank.
