Maid to Order in Hong Kong

Book excerpt: In this update of her 1997 ethnography, the author traces changes that have taken place in the service sector of Hong Kong's workforce since its reunification with mainland China in that year. Argues that though the influx of foreign domestic workers has risen dramatically and they are somewhat more politically active, the abuse, lay-offs, and other challenges of these mostly Indonesian and Filipina women's daily lives in a globalized economy remain much the same, as they relate in their own words.
