Book excerpt: The Michigan 23rd Infantry Regiment fought the entire war in the west, beginning in the summer of 1862. They missed the siege of Nashville while pursuing Confederate troops in Tennessee and Kentucky and they also missed the Battle of Chickamauga while involved in follow-up operations at Knoxville. The regiment participated in the Atlanta Campaign followed by Franklin and Nashville, and then participated in Sherman's Carolina Campaign and the final battles at Bentonville and Averasboro. For some unknown reason, they did not participate in the Grand Review in Washington, but were mustered out in late May, 1865 and returned home by rail. With a total enrollment of 1,417, the 23rd had 41 men killed in action, 8 died of wounds and 228 of disease for a total casualty rate of 20%.
