Book excerpt: The Committee visited relief camps and interviewed Rabbis and leaders of communal institutions, such as the Orphan Asylum, to assess the impact of the earthquake on the San Francisco Jewish Community. It found a general increased need for funding for relief purposes. It was decided that no special immediate relief fund for Jews was needed, but that the problem of support for the existing relief societies could be met by using existing reserve funds, and, if necessary, an appeal to the wealthier members of the community.
