Book excerpt: This report presents a cost analysis of Acetylene production from natural gas using a partial combustion process. The process examined is similar to BASF process. In this process, natural gas is subjected to high temperatures and is converted to acetylene and hydrogen. The heat required by this endothermic reaction is provided by the combustion of natural gas, which occurs at the same time in the burner, in the presence of substoichiometric amounts of oxygen. The Acetylene product is recovered by selective absorption into N-methylpyrrolidinone solvent and subsequently passed through stripping columns. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): "Acetylene", Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 7th edition Keywords: Methane, Partial Oxidation, Oxygen, Acetylene Burner
